Anciens membres
one didnt have to speak French to figure out it meant past members but it helped to spend some time at the website enlisting music where past members was written in English

that wasnt cheating he hoped
he didnt think being observant or familiar was a knock against him but he couldnt tell any longer what others might believe
not that he cared a rats ass what they might
that attitude likely an old habit come down from years ago as a boy scout  Be Prepared

he physically maintained his body in anticipation that someday theyd try and shut him up
but they had better come in a large force

he was no cakewalk

   cake
reminded him of growing up back East

his parents were able to swing a house outside the city walls
his city friends were coarse
they were okay with oblivion
as if they were dealt it in a hand of five-card stud

but he was the oblivious one

he liked to write

singlehandedly he retained their connexion which did weary in between visits then  as if time had stood still they were suddenly back in their childhood friendships
                                                      utterly familiar

they tried to beat him up with the moniker  cake eater

You see they said city boys dont eat cake

Fuck we dont have to have dessert
                                       Not like uppity suburban boys

the insult became ingrained

though
        he preferred pie to cake
fruit pie

he would gladly suffer pie eater

there were still plenty of apple trees in the city to jump an unmaintained wire fence
strip off your shirt
scramble up into their limbs shirt in teeth
fill it tie it off
then scramble down shirt in teeth

he could have been a pie eater in the city

if  it occurred to them to provoke him with that insult
but they were too hung up on cake

they were his anciens membres
though theyd throw down on him if he thought to say so out loud

theyd come in mass

that was the cut of their cloth

theyd make short work of him despite his effort

theyd walk away bloodied
but most of them would walk away

had to remember

they were okay with oblivion

Dont be fooled by numbers

as I was

Dont look for recurrent patterns

as I did

Or numerology

despite it making sense to me

Dont look to numbers for status  rank   debasement

numbers are exactly as they are advertised  numb – ers
doughdedoughdedoughde do re mi fa so la ti dode     doggonit
I lost count
ran out of fingers and toes and friends I counted on to help me
whittled a tree to matchsticks trying to keep count   keep up
                                                                                                   with what
I dont recall

Tallying ho
numbers paramount

numbingly
                  paramount

lemmesee if I can remember(or if I wont make something up to escape scrutiny)  --  scrutiny is uncomfortable  --  will I add up  --  what will I do if I dont  --  what can I do to make up the difference  to add up  --  what slick machinations
--  and quietly crushed beneath the heaping equations  the first consideration  --  which  perhaps  should have been uttered out loud and vibrant  --  Add up?  to whose standard?  what do I care if I add up to it or not  --  I play nice  --
I dont go out of my way to badger or hurt anyone  anything  --  I dont have to look over my shoulder  --  Im brusque
but I dont lie  --  I have no tracks to cover
--  Im up front)

I cant remember

It must have been important then
to begin

but I lost sight of It(behind the heaps and mounds of discarded numbers to get to the very next  --  the whittled slivers)
No  I cant remember what I was counting on

he got lost in the purpose  the routine
in the monotone

it misplaced his reason

The Reason
(how many words are there in the dictionary that precede Reason  --  could they be excised   erased)

stuff it in his ears like the beeswaxed crewmen of Ulysses  who was lashed to a mast to endure the Sirens sweetly singing

hed take the Sirens over the Jackson Five
lashing himself to the livingroom couch with the decorative tassels off throw pillows he was given as a crank homewarming gift when he moved in

all lashed and taut

Sirens singing

ears bleeding
