--   Nothing is still like the dead are still*

--   What did you say

And why did you say it

--   Its something I read earlier today as I walked

It brought me to a stop

I squatted at the street corner grabbed up an In N Out bag someone tossed from a car or dropped on the street  I tore the front off it threw the rest in a refuse can beside the bus stop

Sat on the bench there scribbled it down tucked it in my pocket

I didnt want to forget

--   Did you think youd forget
Its quite stark

--   I wasnt going to gamble

--   But you remembered it anyways

--   I did
Remembering it however doesnt disallow my writing it down

I had no idea how the day might run

--   Youve a mind like a beartrap at least from my experience with you

--   Theres always a first time
And if this was to be my first time Id be goddamned if I forgot

Insurance

--   Youre the last person I know who needs insurance

Or assurance
for that matter

--   A mind

Its a terrible thing to waste

United Negro College Fund

--   There

See

Its shit like that

--   Not really
Thats mantra  Soundbite  A weathered bumper sticker peeling off a pitted and rocksalt rotting steel Midwestern bumper
--   Stop
Youve been away long enough now those steel bumpers and stickers are gone or have been crushed and stacked in junk or metal salvage yards

Guard dogs prowling the grounds at nightYou remember that

--   I remember that

--   Didnt much care for dogs after that

--   I do not

--   No matter
It was a good call

Youre a good friend

--   That dog would disagree

--   That dogs dead

--   It is

Like I said at the onset

Nothing is still like the dead are still

--   Well

You saved me a world of hurt and pain and probably far more than well ever know

--   Yes   It was unfortunate
