            awh    now that was unexpected

he had no qualms about it   unexpected was the hallmark of his life
he sought the unexpected and relished when it found him

if ya gotta go an you do going unsuspected unanticipated is . . well   its damn near dying in your bed in your sleep
truth be known hed rather die in someone elses bed

it was a queer turning he saw out of the corner of his eye  and stayed his hands to the wheel

he let the car idle

he was idlingwhy shouldnt it

he turned his head to give the subtle niggling his entire attention

on the passenger side armrest  forward    where their fingers might lay  on top of the button theyd either push down to electrically lower the window or hooked their fingertips beneath and lift to raise the window close it
there
an odd twisting
and paying attention  seeing  not just looking
he saw that the turning an twisting an fluttering were the shadows of live oak leaves acorns twigs cast through the gentle arc of the 4Runners windshield  cast by the winter sun that he wouldnt have seen in the Spring or Summer or Fall for the suns lower trajectory across the sky

the turning seemed nearly 3D
that if he leaned across the stickshift an put his hand into the shadows he would feel the scale an abrasion of the oak leaves their elongated smoothhusked nuts the whip of twigs

really unexpected

nicely unexpected

he looked through the side window to see where he parked the 4Runner in relation to the slatted fence that ran beside carport

lichen had etched itself to a slat at ninety degrees nine oclock

parking there again and again he worked the same evening hours he could recreate this marvelous enticing treat

he liked to treat himself when he could

an if Nature sought to treat him unexpectedly  the treat was elevated exponentially  not by two or three  an particularly because across the world in this moment only he was the only person being treated such

awh   he played with his shadows for several weeks  let them run over his handacross his fingers  the sun warming the shadows dappling cooler   dullblue grey electricity crawled

    awh
                 didnt see that coming
he leaned across the stickput his hand to the front of the armrest to play with the shadows

the nearly 3D was three dimensional

they struck him three times before pain made him comprehend what was happening struck him two more times before he pulled his hand backleaned back against the car door

a pair of slender young rattlers

they retreated down into the constructed pocket under the armrest

they caught him in the wristhis forearm

blood twined artfully he could appreciate that

he dropped his wounded arm under his heart  slight hope the blood might flush some of the neurotoxins out

he loved living in the country

he left his 4Runners windows opened threefour inches

he wanted the atmosphere of the day inside his vehicle

he didnt run the Air he didnt run the Heater  which precluded people from riding with him  they didnt want to be uncomfortable
he liked uncomfortable
it made his comfort better

spiders threw webs up on the dash

something twisted in his chest

nothing ever twisted in his chest

that cant be good

he looked again

the shadows didnt abandon him

the wind agitated them

they did the Wooly Bully

he better make like Wooly Bully

he fired up the 4Runner shifted into reverse threw gravel as he crossed in front of the house an braking stopped  before racing downhill he looked at the house  quaint little thing  then stomping the clutch he threw it into first and was in fourth before he reached the foot of the hill
