                tucked in a paperback The Final Country by James Crumley he found a piece of folded bluelined notebook paper

the paper itself wasnt the culprit

                                  he forever folded paper and placed it at the back of books in case something occurred to him as he walkedread so he could capturepen it and later elaborate  he also dated and timed it

what confounded himbecause he rarely did it was a list he committed to the page

celery

garlic

chicken bouillon

cans – catfud

as a bookmark he used a receipt from MINER’S ACE HARDWARE  6/24/13  4:41PM for 2 HOOK ANGLE FORGED 12”  TOTAL  $19.33 he paid CASH

that may have been the last list he ever made

since he has depended upon his memory to recall items he shopped for

if he forgot something its happened thats on him  he held himself accountable

the grocer was only a mile an a half off
                                        he could walk backhe refused to drive  he purchased provisions only for himself so the canvas sack slung over his shoulder was eminently capable of holding two meals that typically provided leftovers

he held himself to a high standard

figuring when he got older he wanted to maintainkeep greased the coils of his brain with hot percolating oils
