he immediately disliked and did not respect them

martyrs and death are synonymous

he questioned who would submit to a martyrs death
never a coup de grace
a single gunshot to the brain
a martyr suffers a torturous death
crucifixion
burned at the stake
beheaded with insignificant blades
executed by hacks


wondrous  elaborate stories are related
their stoic deaths are revered
but he did not believe a single word of them


anyone tortured onto death is not silent or beatific



he unfortunately had witnessed animals die lingering deaths
and while their inimitable pain threshold supersede mere mortal mans
they do not die stoically

nor with steadfast nongrimacing eyes

it is not  that their horns or manes or canines disallowed
golden filigree halos from swallowing up the serene blue skies behind them
that there are not terror- and horror-stricken faces
raw  that no mercy was bestowed
hopeless

the human animal dispossessed of hope will be as feral as any animal alive
their big brain cut away
their reptilian one  though far punier  shrieking in the same guttural voice
