Let America be America Again

by Langston Hughes (1938)

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There’s never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this “homeland of the free.”)

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the black man bearing slavery’s scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek—
And finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope,
Tangled in that ancient endless chain
Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!
Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!
Of work the men! Of take the pay!
Of owning everything for one’s own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.
I am the worker sold to the machine.
I am the black man, servant to you all.
I am the people, humble, hungry, mean—
Hungry yet today despite the dream.
Beaten yet today—O, Pioneers!
I am the man who never got ahead,
The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I’m the one who dreamt our basic dream
In the Old World while still a serf of kings,
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
That even yet its mighty daring sings
In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned
That’s made America the land it has become.
O, I’m the man who sailed those early seas
In search of what I meant to be my home—
For I’m the one who left dark Ireland’s shore,
And Poland’s plain, and England’s grassy lea,
And torn from Black Africa’s strand I came
To build a “homeland of the free.”

The free?

Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we’ve dreamed
And all the songs we’ve sung
And all the hopes we’ve held
And all the flags we’ve hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay—
Except the dream that’s almost dead today.

O, let America be America again—
The land that never has been yet—
And yet must be—the land where every man is free.
The land that’s mine—the poor man’s, Indian’s, Negro’s, ME—
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose—
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people’s lives,
We must take back our land again,
America!

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath—
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The abuse and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain—
All, all the stretch of these great green states—
And make America again

Papal bulls  Really

he supposed perhaps if one bought into that bullshit
yes  then of course theyd have their panties in a bunch
White Christians  their imagined supremacy challenged  once youve ruled the roost  cocks  livin-large for millenniums
its tough to let go

virtually it was akin to the infamous NRA bumperstickers(he couldnt being to say how many he had defaced  private property his ass): Ill give you my gun when you can pry it from my cold dead hands

he thought its inscribed expectation was miserable

why would anyone wait for their dead body to grow cold

hed snatch their gun away while they were still alive their eyes still able to register the goings-on about them

hed take their gun when fingers hands and arms were useless  life coalescing to its core  its extremities dying first  expendable  as life retreats towards its death

a bull isnt only an edict

bull is also considered stupid or untrue talk or writing   nonsense

thats where it fell for him
papalshit(stinks a bit of palpable shit – playing in the mud – molding geegaws and whachamacallits of fecal matter – Bless em an sell em – kinda makes ya a bit suspicious of rosary beadshuh – he made a rosary of elk turds lacquered them they were exquisite his disliked aunt wore them and fingered them during masses none the wiser  she wasnt the sharpest knife in the drawer anyways  a bit cruel   Nah cruelty is in the eyes of the beholder  Not Cruel  Justified  she earned it)

The Bull Romanus Pontifex concluded: “Therefore let no one infringe or with rash boldness contravene this our declaration, constitution, gift, grant, appropriation, decree, supplication, exhortation, injunction, inhibition, mandate, and will. But if anyone should presume to do so, be it known to him that he will incur the wrath of Almighty God and of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul. Given at Rome, at Saint Peter's, on the eighth day of January, in the year of the incarnation of our Lord one thousand four hundred and fifty-four, and in the eighth year of our pontificate.”

No he wasnt going anywhere

he was definitely sticking around to incur the wrath and it better be Gods and not some juiced-up white man ranting in ignorance spewing fallacy

hed take the top of his head off with a machete and use its bowl to spit brown chaw liquor into

if these kind of men could claim being Gods vessels then he had as much right to declare to certainly claim he was a secular vessel acting on his own accord and not to have an out to say he was following Divine orders and therefore not responsible for his actions  a baked-in-the-cake excuse if there ever was

he wasnt an underling or willing to tout that he had no choice in the matter

this Bull and others of the Fifteenth Century took their reach from the Domination cited in Genesis 1:28: “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

“ . . . dominion . . . over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

he thought it was farfetched

he couldnt and wouldnt distinguish a human being no matter their color or origin as a “living thing that moveth upon the earth” or make no mistake that white Christians were also living things that moveth upon the earth

Oh you silly boy he heard swirl near his head in an effete voice Saracens pagans infidels heeeathens  Dey aint human beings dey be human beens after white conquest

he marveled that this concept this Doctrine(?) of Discovery had found its way into US Law into the 21th Century that it was used by Ruth Bader Ginsburg(OH Ruth  say it aint so) to renege on the treaty the US Government made with the Oneida tribe

it was beyond his comprehension

it had been used a half-century earlier also by the Supreme Court against Alaskas Tee-Hit-Ton tribe

evidently the Founding Fathers were cuntish

the only thing which protected him from this strange law was his pure unadulterated accident of birth -- his birthright – that he was born white

it seemed a sketchy premise at best

not the hustling white runaway train it was  Either ya get the fuck out of my way or Im goin over the top of ya

a grim demise

unapologetic

he had to distance himself from this bullshit

he had to re-engineer himself

and what he could do in particular was unbind himself from the Church

his parents gave away his soul when they had him baptized

it wasnt theirs to make that decision for him

he would take his soul back

he learned there were two ways to snatch it

first  Excommunication

which was an unlikely route

he didnt commune or communicate with the Church

his second option was defect

that was very attractive

he would cite that his defect was that he didnt commit his soul to the Church

his parents by some unknown reflex or habit or belief in some perceived community they had to belong to decided to have him baptized

he couldnt have anymore stopped his baptism as a babe than a condemned man could stop his unfair execution  innocent of all charges  but the blinkered authority demanded it

if he refused to walk they would drag or carry him

his arrangement  derangement  execution  he reviled    suspended over a cistern of holy water and bathed  and all of it without an ability or his right to conscious deliberation offended him

this offense ought to be felt by God by His Church if they vowed as they did that a man has a right to Free Will and Free Will is understood as freedom from coercion a crime of duress

coercion stands as a pillar opposite freedoms

his defect is his coercion is his baptism

he did not care that baptism the Churchs tradition bore explicit testimony since the Second Century since the beginning of the Apostolic preaching of Irenaeus which held sway with its believers

he did not believe

he wanted his soul back

there were billions where his was and releasing his soul wouldnt diminish the Faithful inordinately
