after dinner he got her curled up on the couch offered another beer lit the livingroom with christmas lights an sat beside her

in the frame their view of the screen to its left was the diningroom an a sliding glass door which reflected the soft coloured lights on its black face
the night the glasss silver as if a mirror

a third of the way into the film out of the corner of his eye he saw a shallow gray motion on the glass

it moved to the right out of sight  then returned slowly passing across the door an disappeared  either behind the wall an outside  or disappeared inside the room

it returned perhaps ten minutes later slowly wafting across to the right stopping in full view  tall  sifting gray  then retreating again to the left an disappeared
it occurred to him then that he was looking unimpeded through the ghost witnessing its reflection on the black glass

he lost track of the film

she seemed to be enjoying it  trails of tears on her cheeks in accord with the sensitive drama


then it reemerged brazenly into his field of vision back and forth back and forth  teasing leaving the idea it might disappear then suddenly reverse washing back across the glass


eventually it disappeared to his left


he might have considered someone walking on the porch on the other side of the glass but their outdoor cat made noise on it padding back and forth if he were late with its kibble any human being would have sounded like a hulking monster

the three interludes where perfectly quiet


the quietness was pervasive
 
then it ceased

the apparition was gone


he watched the final twenty minutes of the film uninterrupted



when the film was over as was their habit they shut down the machine its various functions the flatscreen utterly black an delved into its artistry direction cinematography colour palette camera angles acting dialogue storyline discussed the relevancy of particular scenes if necessary or critical or could be excluded was the films statement message if either subtle or overt or had the film created a peekhole a different vantage point arresting one making them take a step back and really see  see what they might not ordinarily see or even conceive existed

these existential discussions were of primacy to their relationship  

which was why they rarely ever watched the shoot-em-ups the blockbusters the CGd-to-Death mindless exercises in film(of course  there was nothing wrong with that  people will be people)


as their considerations wound down and other bits of their day began to enter and erode it he wanted to mention their roommate in the kitchen earlier that afternoon but at his pronouncement Roommate

I found it folded into sloppy eighths beside a sidewalk under a skirt of bushes where  if it wasnt the nights rain would have demolished it like tissue

it is written anonymously in heavy black marker on a faint-blue lined page approx. seven by eight inches

the writing bled

its letters wore a charcoal umbra at their edges

I pressed the small folded page to my tshirt beneath my jacket to wick moisture from it

at home I laid it on a heat register

as it dried I carefully unfolded it  

I was curious
