listening to the playing of strings

a note plucked a note plunked notes plucked and on and on in delirious  delicious order

in maddening Disorder

if listened to hard enough

we can learn to despise its notes   and the strings theyre played on

for every note plucked
a tick comes off our lives
a grain of sand freefalls
into the basin of our hourglass

listening to the music playing inside his headset
was the hardest thing he really ever had to do
he didnt enter this World with the unspoken and often unrealized advantages a healthy
child is born with
sadly
his parents should never have had him
they werent called birth parents then
his father wasnt married to his mother
he was defective
his mother birthed him and before leaving the hospital she signed him over to the
protection of the State
she was also defective

they must have been trying to prove they werent
that they could do what nondefective people could do
have sex

and between them they created a defective child
a bastard

talk about being forced to play a shitty poker hand

he loved listening to music though

there wasnt anything he preferred to it

it didnt try to make him do anything that would later prove to be irrelevant to his
existence
the State fed and clothed him
he had shelter

he wasnt born to bootstraps

he was born
and if it wasnt for the hospitals lifesaving procedures  their intervention  the existing
protocol which enforced and deemed their efforts

he wouldnt have survived his opening gambit

was it the right choice

he didnt know

his only play in the whole of it was not dying
his body must have liked the experience

he didnt know a lot

but he knew he loved music
and he knew its strains  its bit by bit by bit would accompany him until it stepped aside
Ceased  and allowed him to hear the last grain of sand fall
like the scream of a red meterorite
through the air

When vampires refer to human beings as zombies
they can get away with it because theres no one who can refute Our culpability
to its title

we can turn in fast circles with our eyes peeled wideopen (chasing our tails)

we can bend from our hips and look backwards between our widespread legs  bend
back
cast our eyes to the heavens (therell be no gawd staring back into our baby blues)

                                                                                                         or climb a tree
(you dont see human beings in trees much anymore  --  he supposed we were down to
earth for good)  and looking back down from where we rose
we can recognize its the only tree Mankind came up on
                                                                                                          an old idiom
(he loved old idioms because they never get any smarter)  and because theyre uncannily true
An acorn doesnt fall far from its tree
                                                                                                which should be very Cool
because our acorns come in different colours    Indian   flint   or calico corn
though it is unfortunate that bit of information is continuously and vehemently denied

it has come home to roost  (brilliant fucking idioms!)

Zombies
thats a tough knock
we arent even dead yet
and were being called out for what we are
called out for failing to recognize
as we move through our lives we scarcely pay any attention to where we have been and
why we were there
that our lives come drastically at us in all directions
yet
we seem happiest when we are distracted by whats next or what we want next and
very surprised
at The End
that it evaporated
simmered into the nauseous white tiles of a hospital rooms suspended ceiling

one of many lids topping off our killing jar

Who sold us that Bill of Goods

and if we really didnt buy them

then Who the fuck signed for them for us

he set his pen down  picked his coffee cup
off the green grass beside him  and watched its blades slowly and deliberately tick up
towards the yellow sun  a weight they were not responsible for off their backs

It was an improbable
provocative
utterly disarming question

he posed it
curiously
innocently

completely lost
in her complexion
the passivity in her profile
half-moon expression
her simple beauty accented
by the citys animated colored lights
their hue
hung on her face
and behind her
her shadow scarcely etched
on a serene bank of glass windows
their quicksilver
ivory linen

it wasnt until the words were completely out of his mouth

and in her ears

that he recognized
his question
improper
perhaps vulgar

--   Im sorry  he said   I was
taken by you
your features
expression

your demeanor

it seemed as if you were wearing a mask
a luminous mask
your beauty hiding in it
as the moons beauty hides
luxuriates
in its face

but you really dont recognize it
unless you look very hard

he was blinded  perhaps
too struck or nervous not to be more aware
of the depth of his question

it was not the kind of question one asks lightly

and yet

anyone would find it virtually impossible

not to try and answer it

--   What are you thinking of . . . at this very moment ?
