outside  having a beer  admiring Ayo a white sage Okore a young oak  they stood side by side
Ayo is Nigerian for joy Okore Nigerian Asante Twi for eagle  he copped the names off Nnedi Okorafor out of her book Who Fears Death

the wind had finally let up  two days

this afternoon hed gone from windwhipped to sunbroiled

he was still trying to put out of his mind his late morning beef with a swimmer at the edge of the gyms indoor swimming pool

lane two

if you swam in lane two of the three lanes and the others were being used  you had to share it with another swimmer

a six-three prick came in  donned a mask snorkel and fins and dropped into the end of lane two where he was swimming

hed seen this guy before  saw him in the parking lot parking his swept late model Benz coupe  another silver spoon like President Silver Spoon suffering 100 days of coequal branches of government  particularly an astute federal judiciary  Silver Spoon brayed Who was an unelected judge to stymie his good works  he must have forgot that he got an unelected judge to poach from the Supreme Court bench  an illegitimate president making an illegitimate nuclear placement  maybe McConnell would wake up one morning sharing his bed with a severed stallions head
Life imitating Art

he swam three laps with the thrasher

then he exited the lane and took a dry sauna

at the halfhour split Diver Dan exited too

through the plexiglass panel in the sauna door he saw him pulling the mask and snorkel off his head

he went out of the sauna onto the pool apron to confront him  Youre a rude mutt  You have a prescription that vows for a physical disability that enables you to swim inside and clad as if you were going swimming in the ocean

Excuse me

You settin me up to reply Theres no excuse for you  Youre rude  Simply rude

The rule is . . .
. . . That rule is for swimmers  Ive never been at a meet where one swimmer wears fins and a snorkel  Cant swim without the gearI get it  You an esquire  Splitting hairs  Mocking common sense

This is how I swim . . .
. . . And damn everyone else  I know you recognisedyou could see through your mask  you evicted the other two swimmers with your thrashing

They didnt have to

No  But they didnt want to put up with your rupturedbroken porpoise display  They came to swimI came to swim  not to put up with your antics  You got a prescription for your disability Ill apologise  though somehow I dont think you do  because you dont think  And I think youve been entitled  and that entitlement is your thoughtless excuse not to take into account others around you  Excuse us all to Hell  Were just trying to live in your world

Too bad no one had a harpoon to put you out of our misery

I just wanted you to know youre rude  Youre selfish

You cant talk to me like that

I can  I wouldnt have had to if you hadnt enabled me  So I have  I did  Im done  Things like this comes back on a person  Im only sorry when it does I wont be around to see it
Karma baby  Karma

and as he walked the mile and a half home his gym bag slung over his shoulder a book in his hands he kept getting distracted from the book  he kept imagining shoving another silver spoon up his ass and turning him on a spit between them  Not fitting the crime  A might too hyperbolic  But then whats hyperbole for if not exaggeration  and mayhaps soothing the wild beast
