wee comes up the porch steps like a thief  skittish   head bobbing an weaving turning left and right and left again

Christssake wee  theyre backyard steps not steps to a gallows or assassins lying in wait for ambush

but shes new at the house
                   unexpected

and he adored unexpected

wees a feral cat  still youngvery small   hes always had an affinity for runts long shots anything or anyone vying against the odds

his longstanding insider  his confederate and friend  a daddylonglegs he named appleseed disappeared the same day wee appearedhe never found her body

it was plausible to him appleseed left her bathroom corner its confines and shapeshifted into wee  a quiet spider gone feral cat would be suspicious  jittery   first day in paws

he didnt buy into coincidence

no faith in them

he had all the faith in the world though for Unexpected
                                                                                                                                                crisscrossing bird shadows

he was visited as much and possibly more by bird shadows than birds(feral cats afoot might be a reason – not that you could tell him)

stark shadows  freed souls    silent harbingers  of what?
no fucking idea
they crossed his path as he walked strafing him gaylythey briefly blotted the pages of books he read as he walked

attentive companions   spectral
and he wouldnt have been surprised if in the mix he saw shadow of angels
smackdab down to their shining translucent halos

he went out the door earlier than usual  earlier than usual for the gym  but he wanted to get a workout in before the memorial service that afternoon take in a dry sauna contemplate reflect on the dead mans life

they didnt have much of a relationship

they were related by marriage

the man had been a mover a shaker of the community  a community he didnt have much in common with

despite their relationship he remained happily outside the bulwark the man helped affect and sustain

when it sat  he stood

when it stood he sat

as he left he called into the house to his cat that he was on his way and hed be back in a couple of hours Take care of the place Youre the man of the house while Im gone

that notion tickled him

beginning to walk down the drive to the street under the cover of several small flowering trees he caught movement in the trees across the street along it  fast  then a cry   it was the neighborhood eaglet  a flash of tawny and ivory colour

the eaglet broke out above a barrier of two olive trees careened hard right and flew fast over his head

he sidestepped backpedaled  it went hard left for open sky  as he kept backpedaling it abruptly reversed tack came hard right broke speed reared back in the air wings spread and stomped atop the wood electrical pole in his backyard

its stomp coincided with him making the backyard gate

he didnt open it

they were maybe twenty meters apart

the poles actual height was diminished  the property was cut into a hillside and where it stood it was ten meters lower than where he stood

they werent eyelevel  maybe a fifteen degree incline of his head

the eaglet was exquisite

Hello big guy he hailed

the eaglets head swiveled in his direction fixed him in its stereooptic vision

You can see me better than I can see you friend  Good morning

in acknowledgment perhaps it blinked once  but it continued to hold its gaze

he enjoyed how it disrupted his raptor antenna  that was why he saw it and why he usually didnt see people  he was keen on what was above his head his eyes reflectively to the sky  very few people were tall enough to obstruct his vision

there was that  but then he also found aviansthe last living dinosaurs of keener interest  their flight  agility  birdcalls

a gang of jays emerged from a distant reef of trees

he heard them before he saw them

its lead made a beeline towards the eaglet  its comrades moved behind it as if caught in a backwash a blowback less direct  loopy  erratic  disorganised metal filings pulled by a quick magnet

the lead jay obnoxious calling raucously alighted on a wire just beneath and to the left of the eaglet

it ignored the jay

the rest of the jay gang sought different trees and hidden in leafy boughs they screamed

the lead encouraged it hoppedflew quick to a four by four crossbeam bolted to the pole scarcely a halfmeter down and two meters over from where the eaglet stood

it provoked the eaglets attention

despite its bravado it kept to a crouch  its wings batted then stilled

jay jabber and curse

then it descended to the pole pigthe battleship grey canister suspended behind the eaglet  jabbered and brayed and taunted

the eaglet shifted sidewise keeping a peeper on the discordant jay

he couldnt help but wonder if they shared a language  two different species

the cussing jay then crossed up to the beam to the right of the eaglet  the other jays harped loudly but held their treetop hideaways

the raucous one juiced up on some avian crystal at a sudden began a spasmodic dance between other wires the crossbeam and canister again and again tethered by an unseen loosed radius from the eaglet  its center  its nucleus

jay  beggar  taunter   bigmouth

not two minutes in the eaglet leapt into the air raucous shaddup and cowered took two quick powerful wingbeats eating up plenty of airspace then struck a glide  then it dipped and rose onto the topmost bough of a digger pine five yards down from his place one hundred meters

the jabbering jay then alighted to the pole top and preened quietly

a triumph of sorts he imagined  above the soft steam of cackles

couldnt say hed ever seen anything quite like that

he saw her across the bar

she was unattended

she refused a couple three come-ons

she saw him too

he wasnt eyeing her

his right he assumed to take in a womanadmire her and it not eyeing  or leering  separate categorieshe wasnt sure he knew how to leer

he looked at her with respect

there was no harm in appreciating a goodlooking woman  his – appreciation – was akin to viewing an art piece marveling at its construct depth palette execution  the exquisite detail  qualities which infuse fine artistic expression

he had no intentions towards her

he sat enjoyed his drink and was sufficiently pleased to enjoy her look

he had no idea what she thought when absently he roved off her and took in the aged brick wall behind her the enormous timbers above her part of the superstructure then returning to her found she was looking at him  returning his look

he nodded slightly

she did not

he looked around the bar at the other patrons the intimate couples the noisy clusters individuals waiting to be joinedglancing at their fones checking their wristwatches impatiently   ah  the select dogs bringing their game

she was suddenly on her fone authentically startled

he looked away to not interlope

when he looked again she was gone  her drink empty atop the zinc round café

Too bad breezed through his head

nevertheless  he memorised her mesmerising details and could easily return her to his minds eye

her memory was set fastened   buttoned up

he could retrieve herrevisit her whenever he wanted

it was an ability he didnt take for granted or believed was unique

he remembered her as he remembered names  and faces

if he had to name her what would her name be

nothing occurred

something uncommon

there was no way in hell she was a Christy Sue Nancy  whose complexions were too soft too blonde

she was auburn  when light swept over her red highlights were prominent

she wore her bangs blunted

questioning eyes

he made them green

she was physical statuesque  a handsome woman

despite being physically gone her aura calved in his eyes  seeped deliciously into the creases of his brain

ahem  over his shoulder  Do you like my tight sweater?  he turned to face the voice  See how it fits my body?  a small bag hung from her shoulder  she slowly ran her fingertips down her flanks to her thighs
A brilliant chat-up line dont you think?

he did like her tight sweater

Youre not mute

he cleared his throat softly  No  Not mute  Mildly astonishedI do like your sweater

she smiled large showing teeth  Fine  I like being astonishing

You werent coming over

Astute  I wasnt coming over

Are you involved with someone

he liked that she chose the word involved  No  Im not involved with anyone   Are you

I was Im not

Excuse me  Since youve come all this way  he extended his hand to her  My names Joe

she accepted his hand Im Róison and shook it vigorously firmly the way a hand should be shook

theres nothing like a name you cant catch when its said

Im sorry  I . .
. . You are

Youre gonna make this tough on me

Tough  I walked to youyouve been sitting on your fanny

I had no expectation youd walk over to me

And youre def

Deaf  Im sorry  Did you say Raisin

What did you say

Looks as if youre as sorry as meWere a sorry pair  Your pairs notfar from it  We  you and I  were a sorry pair
I said Raisin

I said Róison

Róison No wonder I missed it What is RóisonIve never heard it before

Irish Gaelic  Róison Dubh  darkling rose  black rose  Sinead O’Connor sang it

Im Polish  Nope    If anything Im not lyrical

she laughed  teeth again  he liked this girl  Could I buy you a drink
Marvelous

Yes please  I was hoping youd get around to that

Im a slow study  Deliberate   But patience is the virtue

As is a virgin

Clever Róison  I like your name   It grows on one

Joe  Suits you

You dont like it

Not particularly   If we get to know one another better Ill devise a pet name

A tight sweater a pet name

If   I said if

Really   You dont strike me as iffy  Or one who hedges her bets       I dont gamble

Youre sure

Sure enough not to gamble
